1.1 What is in this book and what is not

What I present in this book is not “the way” of designing vacuum tube amplifiers. It is just “my way” of designing an integrated push-pull vacuum tube amplifier. There are various other ways of designing and building vacuum tube amplifiers.

This book does not want to compete with several other books where an almost exhaustive discussion of the various ways of designing vacuum tube amplifiers is given. In this book, my objective is to propose a simple yet effective way of designing a vacuum tube amplifier. I start from the very basic concepts and follow a simple path that touches all needed aspects. Even if sometimes I need to go into formulas and details, I try to do it just when strictly needed.

For sure, there are some techniques that allow building better amplifiers, though with much higher complexity. However, it is also true that there are several other techniques, either simpler or more complex, resulting in much worse quality. It is easy to design an amplifier. What is not obvious is how to obtain an outstanding audio quality. The approach proposed in this book is simple and resulting quality is impressive as well. If you succeed in building your tube amplifiers according to my guidelines, I hope you can confirm this.

In this book, I do not address the issue related to actually building a vacuum tube amplifier. Therefore, I will not address issues related to soldering, wiring layout, placing components, grounding, assembling, etc.

In this book, I only address the issue of designing the schema of an integrated push-pull vacuum tube amplifier and its power supply unit. I discuss how to design the circuits, choose the needed components, and compute their values.
